The Stylophone is back!
40 years on and this re-invented, rolf-endorsed, iconic instrument is now more fun than ever!
So... what is a Stylophone?
It's a pocket sized, handheld synthesizer played by tapping the 'keyboard area' with the stylus pen to make a choice of funky noises! You can choose from Classic, Synth and Bass sounds and also add the optional Vibrato effect . You might just find yourself creating musical masterpieces similar to the likes of David Bowie, Kraftwerk, Erasure, Orbital, Marilyn Manson, Pulp, They Might Be Giants, Jon Spencer and White Stripes, who have all used this retro instrument in the studio!. Play solo, or now even plug in your iPod/MP3 player and play along to your favourite tunes!
Invented in 1967, but 40 years on this re-invention is proving to be another huge hit!
Whats New?
This new version is faithful to the original in all respects but adds two new sounds (one lower, the other softer), a volume control and an MP3 input. All the visual design of the original is there, including the distinctive chrome style grill. The classic and distinctive tone is there, together with the optional vibrato switch for variety.
History
The Stylophone was designed in 1967 by Brian Jarvis and manufactured by Dubreq between 1968 and 1975. With high profile marketing led by Rolf Harris, over 3 million were sold. The simplicity of playing, just touching the metal contact "keyboard" with the stylus, makes it a surprisingly instinctive instrument and the tone has a retro synth quality that is never out of fashion. Many top rock stars used the stylophone, most significantly David Bowie on Space Oddity. In 1974 it featured in a Doctor Who story in which a Glam Rocker is contacted by aliens through his stylophone. It is possible to connect the Stylophone direct to a PA for stage performance, using the headphone socket, but traditionalists always prefer to hold the instrument up to the microphone instead.
