The five string resonator banjo (or bluegrass banjo) was the original type of banjo. It preceded the plectrum and tenor banjos and was mainly found being played on front porches in remote parts of Deep South America. It originally was used as an accompaniment instrument but a man called Earl Scruggs changed this with his new and exciting playing style. He introduced a fast 3 finger picking style to the 5 string instrument that took the deep south of America by storm and quickly spread to other parts of America and Europe.
