Did You Know?

1. Maracas are the native percussion instrument of several countries; Columbia, Latin America, Guatemala, Puerto Rico and The Caribbean are just a few!

2. The first ever maraca comes from Columbia and dates back as far as around 1500 years ago. Back then they were known to have been made from materials such as clay. Later they were made using seeds inside hollow dried gourd or coconut shells and today they are made from materials such as plastic, wood and leather.

3. These simple percussion instruments can be played by almost anyone - from babies to cavemen!

4. The word maraca (pronounced ma-rah-kah) comes from the Tupi language of brazil and in some countries they are known as rumba shakers.
