Did You Know?

An ocarina works by air entering via the windway and striking the labium which in turn produces the sound - The air vibrates inside the body of the ocarina. Covering holes of the ocarina lowers the pitch just as raising the pitch requires you to uncover holes!

The ocarina is thought to have dated as far back as 12,000 years ago, in fact the earliest known form of the ocarina was said to have been made from animal horns and was known as a genshorn! it belongs to an ancient family of instruments and is of huge importance in the Chinese culture.

There are various different types of ocarina:

1. Transverse: A rounder shape and held horizontally with both hands (these are usually 10/12 fingering hole ocarinas)

2. Pendant: The English pendant is very small and portable (these usually feature 4-6 fingering holes)

3. Multi-chambered: These are also known as double or triple ocarinas and usually overcome the ocarina's normally limited range of notes!

4. Inline: These ocarinas are small and compact like the pendant but have more holes - the holes enable the player to ascend in pitch with the linear finger pattern rather than finger combinations.
