Did You Know?

Maracas are also known as "rumba shakers" - they have various other names all around the globe - In Trinidad they are better known as "shac shacs" but maraca is most common in the West. The term "maraca" comes from Brazil where it is pronounced "ma-ra-kah".

The maraca originated in Latin America and is classified as an "idiophone". This is a musical instrument that is part of the percussion family - they usually come in pairs and are hand held instruments that produce sounds by players holding them by their handles and shaking them.

Originally maracas were made using food products such as coconut shells which were filled with dry beans or seeds and mounted on a wooden stick. Today the maraca is made up from a range of different materials and fillings dependent on the sound desired. Many are made from plastic, wood and even leather to produce a deeper and softer sound. Fillings range from plastic, wooden and metal beads - some maracas even contain a combination of these to produce a mixture of sounds.

Maracas come in pairs and one is usually pitched slightly higher than the other. It is said that there is archaeological evidence that maracas made from clay existed in Columbia around 1500 years ago.
