The Montreux Student Mini Bassoon is a smaller, lighter bassoon specially developed for children aged 7–11, with a full ABS resin body, nickel-silver plated keys and keywork identical to a full-size bassoon. Supplied with a lightweight case, crook and reeds, it lets young players start the bassoon years before they could manage a standard instrument.

Who is this mini bassoon for?

Very few children can hold a full-size bassoon — the mini bassoon solves that, opening the instrument up to players aged around 7–11 and to school music services building their double-reed sections. Because the keywork matches a full-size bassoon, everything learnt transfers directly when the player is ready to move up, and the ABS body has none of the cracking or swelling risks of wood, so it stands up to school life. What age can a child start the bassoon?

On a full-size bassoon, usually not until the early teens — the instrument is simply too large and heavy. A mini bassoon changes that: this model is designed for children aged 7–11, so young players can build technique years earlier.

Is it easy to move from a mini bassoon to a full-size bassoon?

Yes — that is the point of the design. The keywork is identical to a full-size bassoon, so fingerings and technique transfer directly; the player simply graduates to the larger instrument when their hands and frame are ready.

Why is the body plastic rather than wood?

The ABS resin body makes the instrument lighter for small players, easier to look after, and immune to the cracking and swelling that can affect wooden instruments — a real advantage in busy school environments.
