The 3rd Avenue 1/2 Size Classical Guitar Pack is a first guitar for children aged 5–8: a half-size nylon-string guitar that is gentle on small fingers, supplied with a canvas gig bag with backpack straps and a spare set of strings — ready for the first school guitar lesson.

Who is this guitar pack for?

Children aged around 5–8 taking their first guitar steps. The low tension of nylon strings avoids sore fingertips while chord shapes are being learnt, and the half-size body and short neck put everything within a small child's reach. The bag's backpack straps mean they can carry it to school themselves. Check our Guitar Size Guide if you are unsure — children of 8 and over usually fit the 3/4 size pack, and very small starters the 1/4 size pack.

What age fits a 1/2 size guitar?

Roughly ages 5–8, depending on height and arm reach. If your child is on the cusp, size up — children grow into a 3/4 quickly, and a slightly large guitar is easier to manage than an outgrown small one.

Why nylon strings for young children?

Nylon strings are softer under the fingertips and have lower tension than steel strings, so pressing the strings down doesn't hurt. That keeps first practice sessions positive — the main reason young beginners give up is sore fingers, and nylon largely removes it.

Are the thicker strings metal? They look different.

The three bass strings are nylon-cored with a fine steel winding — standard on every classical guitar. They feel as soft as the plain nylon trebles, and the winding simply gives the bass notes their fuller tone.
