What is the difference between a clarinet and an oboe?

They look similar, but the clarinet uses a single reed on a mouthpiece and has a cylindrical body, giving a warm, flexible tone; the oboe uses a double reed and a conical body, giving a piercing, nasal sound. What age can a child start the clarinet?

Usually around 8–9, when the hands can seal the tone holes and the front adult teeth are settled. The adjustable thumb rest on this model helps smaller players find a comfortable hold from the start.

Is a plastic clarinet worse than a wooden one?
