Is a descant recorder the same as a soprano recorder?

Yes — descant and soprano are two names for the same instrument. "Descant" is the traditional British term, while "soprano" is used internationally. It is the standard recorder used in UK primary schools.

What age can a child start the recorder?

Most children start around age 5–6. The descant recorder is light, the finger holes sit naturally under small hands, and the included finger chart means parents can help even without any musical background.

What is baroque fingering, and does it matter?

Baroque (or "English") fingering is the system used in UK schools and tutor books, so this recorder matches what children are taught in class. The alternative German system uses a slightly different fingering for F and is rarely used in British teaching.
