Why does this clarinet come with two barrels?

The barrel length fine-tunes the instrument's overall pitch: the shorter 62mm barrel raises it slightly (useful in cold rooms or outdoor playing), the 64mm lowers it. Swapping barrels is how clarinettists adapt to different ensembles and venues — a feature usually found on more expensive instruments.

When should a player upgrade from a student clarinet?

Typically around Grades 3–5, when tone and evenness start to be marked — a step-up instrument's better keywork and pads reward developing technique. If the player is still squeaking through first pieces, stay on the student model a little longer.

Is ABS worse than wood at this level?

Not for most advancing players — quality ABS gives a warm, consistent tone with zero risk of cracking and no humidity care, which also makes this a favourite second instrument for wooden-clarinet owners who play outdoors.
