The YDP-166 is the top model in the Arius range and is best suited to beginners and intermediate players who want the closest feel to an acoustic grand piano in a home digital instrument. It offers the GrandTouch-E keyboard with synthetic ebony and ivory key tops and escapement, plus 20 W x 2 amplifiers - both significant upgrades over the YDP-146, which uses GHS keyboard action and 8 W x 2 amplifiers. If those upgrades are not a priority, the YDP-146 delivers the same sound engine and practice features at a lower price.

Touch and Feel

The YDP-166 features the GrandTouch-E keyboard, which uses synthetic ebony and ivory key tops for improved grip and comfort, and includes an escapement mechanism that replicates the subtle release felt when playing a grand piano softly. This is a meaningful step up from the GHS action on the YDP-146, making a real difference when working on dynamics and fine expression. All 88 keys are weighted with heavier resistance in the bass and a lighter touch in the treble.

Sound

As with all Arius models, the YDP-166 samples its core sound from Yamaha's flagship CFX concert grand piano. Virtual Resonance Modelling Lite adds natural harmonic complexity as notes interact, bringing a lifelike depth to your playing. The 20 W x 2 amplifier system drives the 12 cm diffuser speakers with greater clarity and presence than the 8 W x 2 amplifiers on the YDP-146, filling a room with confident, balanced sound from bass to treble.

Features for Learning and Practice

The full suite of practice tools includes 303 Lesson Songs, 50 Classic preset songs, Dual and Duo modes and 2-track MIDI recording. With 192-note polyphony and 10 voices, there is plenty of range to explore different styles and arrangements. Bluetooth audio and MIDI connectivity keep you wirelessly linked to the Smart Pianist app for guided practice, score display and interactive challenges.

The YDP-166 has a sliding key cover and an upright cabinet that sits well in a living room or dedicated practice space.
